Mali me Gropa is one of Albania’s rare karst phenomena and among the most unique in Europe, known for its size and extent. The mountain’s name derives from its upper surface, which is dotted with karstic pits formed during the Ice Age by the dissolution of limestone. This mountain is also the source of several streams that flow through the Tirana district, including the Selita spring. The highest point of the mountain reaches 1,847 meters, known as the Peak of Mcek (also known as Micek). Our hike will begin just beyond the village of ShenMeri (St. Meri) at an elevation of approximately 900 meters above sea level. From there, we’ll enjoy a steady uphill climb to our first stop at an old shepherd’s hut, gaining the initial 700 meters of elevation. This point offers a rest spot for those who prefer not to continue to the peak. For those eager to reach the summit, the hike continues with an additional 300 meters of elevation gain, bringing the total elevation to 900 meters. The entire hike spans 12 kilometers. The terrain is varied, with sections of soft ground and rocky paths. The uphill portion of the hike will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, followed by a 2-hour descent. The journey offers a mix of challenging and rewarding experiences, with stunning views awaiting at the summit.
